Mr A.M.A Careem, a businessman residing within the Dutch Fort in the port city of Galle in Southern Sri Lanka commences a gem and jewellery business to cater to European OceanLine travelers.
As Colombo emerges as the new commercial capital of Sri Lanka, the firm moves its operations to the fort business district in Colombo and establishes a showroom at No 10, Victoria Arcade Building close to the Colombo harbor. Tragically, the part of the building where the company’s offices were located was engulfed by fire and destroyed in 1980.
To cater to the increased numbers of tourists visiting the island, the company opens its first hotel showroom at the new Browns Beach Hotel located in the spectacular beach resort town of Negombo.
As tourism arrivals continue to grow another showroom is commissioned at the Club Oceanic Hotel in the beach town of Trincomalee, on the eastern shores of Sri Lanka.
Careem Jewellers second store in the beach resort of Negombo is opened at the Royal Oceanic Hotel. In 2006 the hotel is subsequently renovated and upgraded to a 5-star property and renamed as The Jetwing Beach Hotel, Negombo.
An exclusive showroom is opened at the new Colombo Hilton, which soon becomes the main retail outlet of the company catering to a widespread local and overseas clientele.
To consolidate its existing Japanese client base, the company commences participation at the International Jewellery Tokyo show, the largest gem & jewellery show in Japan.
In recognition of its significant performance in the export of gems and jewellery, the National Chamber of Exporters awards the coveted Most Outstanding Company in the Gem and Jewellery Sector award to A.M.A Careem Jewellers.
A.M.A Careem Jewellers ventures into the world’s leading gem & jewellery market and the largest jewellery trade show by participating at the JCK Las Vegas show in the USA. After much initial success the company continues to participate at the show annually.
The company is selected by the Export Development Board to be a part of the inaugural Sri Lanka Pavilion at the prestigious Basel World Watch, Clock and Jewellery Show in Switzerland.
